Williams International Race Meet Report

The 2017 edition of the Williams International Racemeet came off  on the weekend of Sept 2nd and 3rd. All 3 Speed Team drivers were on the entry; Barry in the Suzuki SX4, Roger in the Ford Focus and Rhett in a Suzuki Swift competing in the Swift Cup series.

The three drivers brought the weekend's entry to a record 113. The weather on the weekend was a stark contrast to the previous year's international, as the event was blessed with brilliant sunshine from start to finish.

As the Focus was returning to action after a year of being sidelined with an oil pressure issue, there was anticipation about its performance this year. Roger looked set to secure pole in Saturday's qualifying, but a last moment push saw Kyle Gregg set a new qualifying record and secure pole position.  Starting second on the grid on race day, Roger got the jump on Gregg at the start to take the lead of the first CMRC race. He led this race unchallenged  and shaved nearly two seconds off the previous Race Record of 59.530s set by Barry. Following this win of the first race, the car developed an engine noise which led Roger to sit out the subsequent two races as a precaution.

In the Swift Cup, Rhett wasted no time as he qualified on pole, which he made good use of to win the first race. He also lead 98% of race 3, only to slip to second as a result of a good pass from Justin Campbell, then a 15 sec penalty pushed him further down the order.

As he did last year, Barry carried the flag for the Speed Team and for the nation. He secured 3 chequered flags in the Group 4 CMRC 2WD as the SX4 performed flawlessly throughout the day. Barry came home the overall CMRC Champion of the Barbados round, taking two 1st place finishes and a 3rd place, scoring maximum points for Barbados in the CMRC Championship.
