How old were you when you started your rallying career?
My rallying career didn’t actually begin till I was 21.
What type of car did you start with?
An Austin Maestro. I think that was the slowest car ever used as a rally car!! During the five years I spent competing in that Austin Maestro I came dead last every time out!!! Never mind. I was enjoying my new found joy and I certainly was gaining valuable experience.
What about your next car?
A Peugeot 205 which immediately launched me up the leader board. Now I could actually finish in the top 5 and within a couple of years I managed to score my first win against the “top dogs”, beating Michael Gill, Roger Skeete and Roger Hill.
Tell us about your rivalry with the other drivers
In 1998 I managed to bring the first Group A Subaru Impreza to the island. This started a move that has resulted in the relatively large number of World Rally cars present in local rallying today. From then till now, the rivalry between the top rally drivers has been vibrant. Drivers such as Hill, Gill, Mayers, Manning, Powell and Skeete have made competing here and regionally a great pleasure.
Outside of Barbados, where are some of the places you’ve competed?
I’ve travelled to Jamaica and Trinidad several times over the years, winning a few times in Trinidad but never in Jamaica.
Tell us about “The Surfer”
During my teenage years my real love was for surfing. Unfortunately, there was no association at that time to conduct surfing competitions. But in 1983, the Barbados Surfing Association was formed and I became a member of the management committee. I was 19 years old.
Did you always have a love for the ocean?
My mum told me that most mornings when I was an infant she would take me to the beach, and that although I took 14 months to walk, I was swimming before I was a year old!
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know
I’m allergic to plants.
Is there anything else you want to say?
I am truly blessed to be able to compete in one of the greatest rally cars ever made, a Ford Focus WRC and to be able to use the vast knowledge and experience I have gained over the years to compete and do what I love. Thanks to the support of wonderful sponsors and the encouragement of friends, family and fans, I have been able to do what I’ve done and shall continue to do what I do. Thanks, love, God bless.
